Here at Future First, we believe sustainability starts at homeāliterally. Thatās why weāre always on the lookout for brands that not only look good in your living room but also align with our values. Recently, we broughtĀ Ruggable rugs into our homeāspecifically for the kitchen and entrance areasāand itās time to share how theyāre holding up in our rainy, muddy, pet-loving reality.
And yes, Kasper was involved in every step of the testing š¾
šæ Sustainability First: What Are Ruggable Rugs Made Of?
We were especially interested in how Ruggable rugs stack up on the sustainability front. According to Ruggableās official safety and materials page, hereās what we learned:
-
The Rug Covers (top layer): Machine-washable and water-resistant, made with polyester sourced from recycled materials.
-
The Rug Pads (bottom layer): Made from approximately 95% post-consumer recycled polyester and TPE (thermoplastic elastomer)āa material used in baby products and considered safe, durable, and recyclable.
-
All rugs are OEKO-TEXĀ® STANDARD 100 certified, meaning theyāre rigorously tested for harmful substances.
-
No PFAS, no chemical flame retardants, and dyed with non-toxic, water-based inks.
-
Modular design and reduced packaging help cut down on long-term waste.
Thatās a solid list of planet-positive features for a product we literally walk all over.
š§¼ Real-Life Performance: Machine Washable? Actually... Yes!
We havenāt had to toss ours in the machine just yet (even after a rainy walk or two), because theyāve been incredibly easy to maintain with a vacuum or a soft, soapy brush. Thatās saying something, considering how often muddy paws wander across the hallway.
Usability highlights:
-
The low-pile surface doesnāt trap dirt as easily as a traditional shag rug.
-
Lightweight design means even one person can lift, shift, and clean them.
-
We especially appreciate the modular format: rug covers are removable and replaceable, which extends the lifespan of the base rug pad.
They may not be biodegradable, but their long lifespan, easy maintenance, and recyclable components make them a smarter, lower-waste option.
šŖ What About the Doormats?
This is where things get a little soggy.
We also tested Ruggableās doormatsāwhich looked great, but didnāt perform as well in the rain-soaked Netherlands. They donāt dry quickly and tend to stay damp, which can lead to odor and extra mess indoors.
While we still love them aesthetically (and theyāre super easy to shake off), we hope Ruggable will develop a weatherproof upgrade better suited for outdoor climates.
š¾ Kasperās Paw of Approval: 4/5
āTheyāre soft, durable, and never complain about muddy paws. But I do like my feet dry, and the doormats could be more weather-friendly.ā ā Kasper
Weāre giving Ruggable a 4 out of 5 paws for:
-
Great use of recycled materials
-
Low-maintenance, machine-washable design
-
Certified safety for pets and people
-
Room for improvement on wet-weather performance
š” Final Verdict: Are Ruggable Rugs Future First Approved?
Yesāwith a few notes.
If youāre looking for a sustainable rug that works hard and looks great doing it, Ruggable rugs deliver. Theyāre a smart alternative to fast-furnishings and synthetic options, especially in homes with pets or kids. And their eco-credentialsāfrom recycled materials to machine washability and chemical-free designāmake them a step in the right direction.
Weāll be watching closely for improvements to their outdoor line, and in the meantime, weāre happily rolling with our indoor rugs.
